Indonesian novelist, short-story writer, essayist, and critic. The Japanese occupation (1942-1944) and Indonesia’s struggle for independence has provided the basic material for Pramoedya’s major works. His best-known novel is the Buru Quartet (1980-88). The story, set at the turn of the 19th century, depicts the emergence of anticolonial Indonesian nationalism. Pramoedya’s works have been translated into at least 28 languages.

The lamps are different, but the light is the same;

It comes from beyond.
If you keep looking at the lamp,
Thou art lost.
For thence arises number and plurality.
Fix your gaze upon the Light.
